P0442 – Not the Gas Cap - *Resolved!*

Postby yukon on Sat Sep 26, 2009 6:23 am

Just looking to see if anyone else has come across this situation or have any pointers on where to look. Got the P0442 code Evaporative Emission Control System Leak on the OBD2. Replaced gas cap with OEM and reset engine light. About 5 Days later code came back and rest it. Another 4 days same thing.

Any help on the EVAP system and best place to look for the leak would be appreciated.

Well, I can also assure you that it's not the gas cap.

I've removed the evap system on my car and this code only appeared after I removed the air intake canister. It's located up inside the drivers side, rear tire well. Maybe yours has malfunctioned or the plug has become disconnected. It's nothing to worry about though. If you know someone with a tuner just get them to delete the code and don't worry about it.

You've got a leak in the evap system.
That's all that means.

I ended up changing the evap canister. no code since...

Ok, I have had a homemade CAI on my car for 2 years now and have not had an issue till now with the engine light I have read other posts about how the intake can effect this code but nothing definite and no sure fix. I’ll check out the lines to the canister and make sure they are nice and tight. If it sets the code again Ill replace it.

I'll let you know how it goes and thanks to both of you for your suggestions.

Don’t know if anyone is on here to read these things anymore but thought I would close out this thread with my solution.

After replacing gas cap, pressure control solenoid, vent purge valve for $60 still got the p0442 code. After searching lines and checking connections I ended up spray painting my filler neck and viola. The leak was coming from the top of my filler neck right under the gas cap. The metal surrounding the plastic piece you put the filler in at the gas station had corroded just enough to make it porous. Paint didn’t last too long so ended up applying clear cocking around that area sealing it up.

Been 4 fill ups and no more code.

Hope this help prevent someone a lot of headaches and cash in the future.

Cheers! :D
